Duo presentation with Maya Homburger , violin and viola and Barry Guy, bass
The lecture-recitals and educational presentations by baroque violinist Maya Homburger and double bassist/composer Barry Guy focus on "musical stretching," exploring the creative synthesis between early baroque masterpieces, contemporary compositions and free improvisation.
They give an insight into a way of connecting various styles and genres seamlessly, explaining how strict baroque structures ,such as works by J.S. Bach or Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, interact with contemporary composition and spontaneous free improvisation.
Barry Guy will also demonstrate the use of extended techniques on the double bass and talk about the specific colours and timbres he uses in his compositions for the duo and solo violin.
The lecture is also focusing on a specific way of listening and reacting to each other within the composed as well as improvised pieces.
very short biographies....
Barry Guy is an innovative bass player and composer whose creative diversity in the fields of jazz improvisation, chamber and orchestral performance and solo recitals is the outcome both of an unusually varied training and a zest for experimentation, underpinned by a dedication to the double bass and the ideal of musical communication. His concert works for chamber orchestras, chamber groups and soloists have been widely performed and his skillful and inventive writing has resulted in an exceptional series of compositions. Among his current ensembles, amongst many others, are the Homburger / Guy Duo, the "Acanthis" Trio with Lucas Niggli and Maya Homburger, the Duo with Jordina Milla (piano) , the Parker / Guy / Lytton trio , the trio piano trios with Angelica Sanchez , Ramon Lopez ,with Marilyn Crispell ,Paul Lytton and with Jordina Milla and Lucas Niggli. His main big band project these days is the Blue Shroud Band.
Ever since meeting the composer and solo bassist Barry Guy - on the occasion of an extended concert tour with Christopher Hogwood’s Academy of Ancient Music in 1988 - Maya Homburger has devoted her time developing her own personal style on the baroque violin as well as managing Improvised and New Music projects and running her own CD label Maya Recordings.
The idea to perform baroque solo works in the context of free improvised music and newly commissioned pieces sparked off the Homburger/Guy Duo and together Maya Homburger and Barry Guy have given concerts in many major Jazz, New Music and Baroque Music Festivals all over Europe and in Canada.
She specialises in performances of Bach’s solo sonatas and partitas as well as some of the cello solo suites on the viola.
Maya Homburger plays on a beautiful modern violin built in 2020 by the German luthier Stefan-Peter Greiner and on a viola by the Dutch luthier Michiel De Hoog. Being a baroque violinist , she uses various baroque bows made from a interesting variety of precious woods.
