Reflections in light

REFLECTIONS IN LIGHT is a cycle of works for different ensembles ranging from solo double bass to six musicians composed especially, but not exclusively, for performances inside the vast sonic and visual reverb of the glass and metal prism-shaped structure encapsulating the medieval church ruins at Domkirkeodden in Hamar, Norway.

1. The first piece, subtitled PRISM, was written for a string trio with violin (Bjarne Magnus Jensen), cello (Audun Sandvik) and myself on the double bass. PRISM was premiered in Hamardomen in June 2021 as part of the Flagstad festival. The main structure of the piece has three movements, each named after one of three stars in the Summer Triangle asterism: Vega, Deneb and Altair. In addition to this main structure, the piece consists of three solo parts and three duo parts exploring every possible duo this ensemble allows.

2. The second piece, subtitled DUALITY, was written for a duo with double bass and voice (baritone, Bernt Ola Volungholen). This piece will be premiered June 18th 2022 as part of the Flagstad festival. DUALITY is a slowly moving exploration of a short verse by Rumi, exploring every word and syllable as they echo through the long reverb in Hamardomen and pushing the range of dynamics from powerful fff to almost inaudible whispers.

All day and night, music,
a quiet, bright
reed song. If it
fades, we fade.

- Rumi

3. The third piece, whose working title is WAVE / PARTICLE, is currently in the process of being finished and it will be premiered in Hamardomen August 11th as part of Festspillene i Elverum. This project is a creative collaboration with Arve Henriksen, in which we both act as composers contributing sonic ideas and where I am in charge of writing the scores. The music is being made for an ensemble with piano / electronics (Ståle Storløkken), violin (Vilde Sandve Alnæs), double bass / viola da gamba (Inga Margrete Aas) and percussion (Ane Marthe Sørlien Holen).

New music in the making: "Reflections in light - WAVE / PARTICLE", commissioned by Festspillene i Elverum

3 months 3 weeks ago

"Reflections in light - WAVE / PARTICLE" is a new work by Arve Henriksen and Sigurd Hole, commissioned by Festspillene i Elverum 2022. The work will be premiered in Hamardomen on August 11th at 22.

The work draws inspiration from the changing nature of light and its dynamic presence in time and space. The music can be seen as an extension of Hole's solo work, where exploration of the double bass' harmonic spectrum is a central aspect.

In "Reflections in light", these textures are orchestrated for several strings together: two double basses, viola da gamba and violin. Prepared piano and various percussion devices (such as glass, metal and stone) form multidimensional rhythmic textures that are woven into the sound of the strings.

Henriksen's distinctive trumpet sound will act both as an integral part of these different soundscapes, and as a bright, shining star through the reflections of light..

Musicians
Arve Henriksen - trumpet / electronics
Sigurd Hole - double bass
Ståle Storløkken - piano
Vilde Sandve Alnæs - violin
Inga Margrete Aas - double bass / viola da gamba
Ane Marthe Sørlien Holen - percussion

DUALITY is written for a duo with double bass and voice (baritone, Bernt Ola Volungholen). This piece will be premiered June 18th 2022 in Hamardomen, as part of the Flagstad festival.

DUALITY is a slowly moving exploration of a short verse by Rumi, examining every word and syllable as they echo through the long reverb in Hamardomen and pushing the range of dynamics from powerful f to almost inaudible whispers creating painterly sonic textures.
